In this blog, we look at the influence that a good idea and amazing Marketing campaign can have on Christmas.
In 1931 Coca-cola commissioned artist Haddon Sundblom to paint Santa Claus for the company’s Christmas advertising, and instead of drawing him in the usual colours of green, purple and blue he used red to match Coca-Cola’s branding.
The company began dabbling with Santa in 1920 but it wasn’t until they commissioned Sundblom in 1931 they requested Santa to be more of himself than just a man dressed as Santa. The marketing of that campaign changed Santa Claus forever. We now know him as the jolly red man. It shows the power of what a good product can do with a great marketing campaign behind it. This type of marketing is still used today, to be authentic.
Next, we have a look at the Christmas cracker. They were first invented by Tom Smith in 1847 in London after he visited France and loved their almonds wrapped in beautiful paper – ‘bon bon’. His first attempts were missing the crack and when he perfected the mechanism in the 1860s the idea took off. The product has since become a popular Christmas celebration item used in every household and Christmas party. – Now that’s a great product idea.
The two brands are still in circulation today, you can still buy Tom Smith Crackers and of course Coca-cola. It would be interesting to see how they began their Supply Chain and how far it has come today.
