In honour of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) day, we would like to recognise one of our employees Oscar Grimes. Oscar began his career with us as an intern in 2020, whilst studying for a Bachelor of Engineering at Swinburne University.
Always having a love for Maths and Science at school, he resolved to study Engineering at University and found a love for Software.
“I was originally studying robotics engineering at uni, but I didn’t enjoy the electrical side of that I loved programming so I decided to switch to software engineering.”
Three year’s into his degree the opportunity presented itself to intern with us here at BrainStorm, which has given the 24-year-old the exposure and experience to start his career.
“I’ve enjoyed learning new things that I didn’t get the chance to study at Uni – such as, SQL, APIs, and new programming languages (such as PHP and javascript). It was great to see the real-world applications of what I studied at uni applied through projects I was a part of at Brainstorm. It’s been great learning how to work as part of a bigger team and having the chance to work with customers,” Oscar said.
We were so impressed with Oscar, and along with the experience he had already gained with us before graduating was enough to bring him on board into a full-time role.
“I was able to bank a lot of real-work experience before I graduated, which also helped with my studies. I learned a lot in areas that I didn’t get the chance to study at University, and most of all, I had a job when I graduated.”
The AFL enthusiast believes that, interning is an attractive start to a career, no matter the industry.
“Internships are a great way for students to get a chance to experience what it is actually like to work in the field that they are interested in. They also give you a chance to learn things that you wouldn’t necessarily learn in your studies and begin to specialise in certain areas. They can help you to decide if the field is right for you and what areas of the industry you are interested in,” he explained.
Internships aren’t a new phenomenon but they are still a really important avenue for students wishing to grow in the career they are interested in. At BrainStorm we love assisting the future of STEM. If you’re a student wishing to learn more about internship programs head to Australian Internships or if you’re interested in a career in software feel free to contact us directly.
